Using Common Sense in Your Behavior

Things You Should Do

MAKE yourself heard. If you do not speak for the welfare of animals, who will? Only those people with personal knowledge of a situation can report it. There are some instances in which you can remain anonymous. Other situations will require you to stand behind your report.

BE persistent. If you feel the agencies to which you are reporting information are not taking you or your concerns seriously, speak with someone in charge. Make an effort to learn exactly why it is that the situation has not been resolved. It could be that you have not provided enough information to allow the agency to take action.

BAND together. Often times a single person cannot change a situation by themselves. If you learn of others who have knowledge similar to yours, band together, develop a plan and demand to be heard as a group.

Things You Should NOT Do

Compromise your safety for the sake of gathering evidence to submit with your report/complaint.

Go on the property of another without permission. In spite if your best intentions, you may be criminally charged with trespassing.

Take an animal belonging to another person. Animals are considered property under the law. If you take an animal belonging to another person, you could be criminally charged with theft. If you find yourself in an emergency situation where you must act quickly to save the life of an animal, call law enforcement authorities immediately and demand help. If you act on your own without the permission of law enforcement authorities, you may be criminally charged even if your actions saved the life of an animal.
